My Paris, Week 22: A Birthday in the City of Light
So! I took an unintentional blog break last week. Birthday shenanigans plus a sudden influx of work meant lots of late nights and subsequent late mornings. You know how it is. Wine, and beer, and food, and friends, possibly some dancing, and suddenly it feels like the internet can do without you for one more night.
I couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate my birthday than at Verjus. So we went twice… once for drinks with friends in the bar, and once for the tasting menu in the restaurant.
I treated myself to some Grüner Veltliner for my birthday. Grüner is one of my favorite wine varietals, and it’s so hard to find in France! I’ve been asking Laura about this one for ages and finally bought the bottle.

We arrived for dinner on my actual birthday evening rather early. I loved getting to experience the charm and ambiance of the empty dining room (which has huge windows that frame the Palais Royale next door), then watch it slowly fill up with happy diners. Before dinner, we got to chat a bit with the awesome servers (who remembered which table we had the last time we were there — impressive) and Braden, the chef.
It turns out the menu for the evening was similar to the one we’d had before so — get this — he had created a new menu just for me.
I don’t know the last time I’ve had such warm and considerate service from a restaurant. Braden and Laura are cultivating something unique here; a restaurant in Paris where you can get top-notch food without that cold, detached attitude that comes with so many restaurants in this city. Whenever I go there, I genuinely feel like I’m visiting someone’s home.
