A Girly Brunch: Café Charlot and Jacques Genin

One snowy Sunday, I met up with wonderful Jackie for a cozy, girly brunch.

Café Charlot is on a bustling corner in the NoMa, full of very chic people desperate to get their sunday œufs brouillés and cafés. Pretty interior, decent brunch food, gruff waiters. It’s the full Parisian experience.

Realizing that we were not but five-minutes’ walk from Jacques Genin’s famed salon, we shuffled through the snow to warm our souls with chocolat chaud and mille-feuille. Oh, and caramels. Oh my god, those caramels.

    I’m fascinated by your use of the neighborhood abbreviation, NoMa. Is this anglicism? Or do the French use the expression? I come from New York City, which I believe originated the neighborhood initials craze with Soho (which stands for South of Houston Street).

      I’ve never heard a French person use it, but I find the abbreviation (for “Northern Marais”) useful. I’m also just kind of used to that variety of neighborhood abbreviation — after all, in LA we have WeHo and SaMo.

        Indeed, we are not used to these kinds of abbreviation yet as a few years ago, most of the hip places where located in the same districts.
        There is one very famous though: SoPi for South Pigalle – and the neighborhood is amazing!
