(Note: I had hoped to keep my backlog of posts from the summer in some kind of chronological order, but my last-minute jaunt to Paris kind of jammed up the works. So you’re going to get California posts all mixed in with Paris posts, which actually feels more true to my life nowadays. You can find all of the post from this summer’s road trip here!)
So I have this roommate, J. He’s not my roommate now, but we lived together in Santa Monica during my last year of college and a couple years after that. I’m sure that, one of these days, years in the future, we’ll find ourselves living in the same house again. I call him my eternal roommate.
So when I first met J, he was a scrawny, geeky Ph.D. candidate in the electrical engineering department at UCLA, constantly pale from hours of laboring under the florescent lights of a basement lab. Now he’s the CEO of a tech startup funded by some of the biggest names in the game, with a house set into the hills of San Jose, out of which he runs said startup.
J offered to let us crash at his place when O and I took our road trip into NorCal, and of course I was curious as to his new digs — but I couldn’t have been more surprised to find that he and his compatriots live in such comparative luxury. I mean, just look at that “office”!
Proud doesn’t even begin to describe it.

9th best bar in the world, and the best bar in Europe, according to World’s 50 Best Bars. You really can’t go wrong here.
One of the things I admire most here is the total lack of pretension. Despite the very serious cocktail program, and the incredible breadth and depth of knowledge the people behind the sticks have, it still manages to feel like a welcoming neighborhood bar — albeit welcoming in a dark and sexy way. Last time I visited, there were dudes in t-shirts and basketball shorts mingling with women in Chanel. Then again, it was fashion week.

Another photo assignment during my recent week in Paris: Le Mary Celeste!
Le Mary Celeste, or LMC for short, holds a special place in my heart. I attended the Brooklyn Brewery launch party there with a huge group of friends, which involved copious amounts of free craft beer. (Tests indicate that free craft beer will win you my friendship and admiration approximately 100% of the time.)
I also had the opportunity to interview chef Haan a few months ago, and I’ve got to say that his food just keeps getting better and better — not to say that I didn’t miss that incredible cauliflower dish they had on the menu a while back this time.

Hey, remember those photo assignments I went to Paris for? This was the first — one of my favorite places in my old neighborhood, the Marais.
By now, lots of you know that Candelaria is the best place in Paris to get your Mexican food fix along with your artisan cocktail fix. But did you know that it’s also the best place to nurse your Sunday morning hangover with delicious huevos rancheros and hair of the dog drinks? Even better: it’s usually just tacos in the front and cocktails in the back, but during brunch you get to dine and drink in that awesome speakeasy back room.
Mexican food has long been my morning-after-party craving, so this seems a natural and perfect combination to me. I wasn’t hung over when I showed up a couple of weeks ago for the first of many shoots during my week in Paris, but I was coming off of nearly twenty-four hours of plane and and airport time, so close enough?
