Brunch at Gjelina [Los Angeles]

Isn’t it so gratifying to find a kindred spirit? When Jessica of Thread and Bones reached out to me for an impromptu brunch while she was in LA, I had just the spot in mind — Gjelina in Venice, the much-hyped, reservationless spot on Abbot Kinney that’s held the food scene in thrall for years.

Over coffees, cocktails, and the clickety-clack of our cameras, under the wary eyes of the desperately hip front-of-house staff, we discussed our paths and passions and Paris — we had both been in the city at the same time and somehow managed not to meet, despite having similar haunts.

To ground the ephemerality of a friendship in its first flutterings of being formed, we had earthy Moroccan baked eggs and sturdy polenta studded with kale and bacon. And cocktails to loosen tongues, bien sur, not that we ended up needing them. We needed another hour or two of meandering through the Venice shops to try to talk ourselves out, and we were still yet unsuccessful. To be continued.

I had a great lunch there on my birthday last year. Two things in this post makes me want to head back to LA right now; first, the cocktails. I turned 21 on Friday. Second, that shot where you can spy Abbot Kinney out the window? It really tugged at my heartstrings. You can tell that I’m missing the city.

I’ll probably be back next year, it would be great to meet for brunch next time I’m in town!

Oh goodness! You are as excellent a writer as you are a photographer — this is such a delightful telling of our fabulous brunch! I love the use of the black and white photos — what a stunning space. You really captured it here, and good job getting the exterior shots! I always forget to snap an establishing shot =)

Our meet-ups just get better and better — can’t wait for the next one!
    XO

Hello, love this shoot! Great way to capture Gjelina’s personality. Did you need a permit to shoot? It feels like you were there during open hours so just curious if they had any issues with it.

Thanks! No, we didn’t need any permit to shoot — Jessica and I just snapped away, though someone from the restaurant did ask us to be subtle.
