Diane, A Broad

Hey, remember those photo assignments I went to Paris for? This was the first — one of my favorite places in my old neighborhood, the Marais.

By now, lots of you know that Candelaria is the best place in Paris to get your Mexican food fix along with your artisan cocktail fix. But did you know that it’s also the best place to nurse your Sunday morning hangover with delicious huevos rancheros and hair of the dog drinks? Even better: it’s usually just tacos in the front and cocktails in the back, but during brunch you get to dine and drink in that awesome speakeasy back room.

Mexican food has long been my morning-after-party craving, so this seems a natural and perfect combination to me. I wasn’t hung over when I showed up a couple of weeks ago for the first of many shoots during my week in Paris, but I was coming off of nearly twenty-four hours of plane and and airport time, so close enough?

It’s been a busy week for me here in Paris. I’ve been running around between all kinds of restaurants and stores and bars, but in the meantime I’ve gotten the chance to spend some minutes with this ol’ gal, who hangs out on a roof by my little rented apartment by the Canal Saint-Martin.

    Apparently her name is Buffy.

There’s this smaller grey cat too, but Buffy is very defensive of her rooftop so he daren’t venture closer when she’s in state.

I like to think we’re friends now.

Back to Paris! by Diane, A Broad (dianeabroad.com)

Quick announcement: I’m excited to tell you that I’ll be back in Paris for a week starting this Sunday! I’m in town for photo assignments, shooting at some of my favorite restaurants and bars in the city. My schedule is already packed, but I’d love to meet up with my lovely expat community during shoots, since I’ll be hanging around eating, drinking, and waiting for the light to change while taking photos. Don’t be shy — if you’d like to meet up, please send me an email at dianeabroadblog@gmail.com, or leave a comment below, and I’ll send you my shooting schedule!

This post is difficult to write. I’ve been putting it off for a long time, mostly because I’m in denial about leaving Paris in the first place.

Yes, I’m leaving. I’m going back to LA because… well, various reasons. My long-stay visa is up, my job wants me back, I have an apartment waiting for me, etc. etc. etc.

Right now it all feels like meaningless excuses. It’s so hard to leave, especially in summer with the long days and blue skies and flowers and the strawberries and cherries and tomatoes at the markets. It doesn’t help that I’ve been staying at the most charming AirBnb apartment I could ever imagine, a tiny chambre de bonne with an Eiffel Tower view. I am truly tempted to say, “screw responsibility, screw being an adult, I’m going to live the broke bohemian life here.”

But that’s not me. I’ve always been the safe one, who makes sure that the edges are all straight and aligned before sewing them together. And let’s face it, I couldn’t go to nearly as many good restaurants if I was living the boho life.
